The Five Pillars: Daily disciplines to calm your mind

The Five Pillars: Daily disciplines to calm your mind

October 10, 2019

I remember a time in India where I was asked by my teacher if I ever experience anxiety. I completely shut him down because I was much too proud to admit that actually, he was 100% on the money!

You know how a hummingbird flaps it’s wings 100 times a second but appears calm and still; from the outside I looked totally chill but really my mind was moving so fast I had no time to catch a thought.

I’m not saying that never happens anymore, because it totally does! I’m just saying that, I can now admit it…and over the last 7-ish years I’ve found ways to keep it somewhat steady.

I think the trick to feeling closer to your bliss is to make your own mental state the absolute top priority in your life, above everything and everyone else and to find ways to keeping calm that work for you.

Over the last few years I've come to realise that to really prevent anxiety form bubbling to the surface, you have to take a holistic approach; you can just rely on one thing. To feel my best I have practices that cover five pillars - Grounding, Freedom, Release, Empower and Growth:

Grounding - Things that bring your energy back to earth (walking outside, yoga, meditation, community, time with family and friends..)

Freedom - Things that make you feel free (creating things, dance, running, cycling..)

Release - Things that allow you to offload some of your thoughts (morning pages, therapy, creative writing, talking to people)

Empower - Things that make you feel like you can do anything (these could be anything from strength bringing to affirmations…we all empower ourselves in very different ways!), gratitiude (!!) although gratitiude could be a pillar of its own.

Growth - Learning more (workshops, books, podcasts..anything that adds to your knowledge of yourself of whatever you're in to, this is empowering too!)

Although I do most of those things, the ones I do almost daily are: Yoga & Meditation, Creating things, Morning pages (game changer!), gratitude and Podcasts…But that’s just me, they change sometimes but as long as I’m doing a grounding, freeing, releasing, empowering and growing ‘thing’ almost every day, I feel a million times more me.

Put yourself first and find what works for you 💫

xoxo
